Discover the Crypt of Leonardo of Milan told by a friend who visited this fantastic place.
“We are in the heart of the Milan city, a few steps from Duomo. Exactly in Piazza San Sepolcro. In the Roman period, the square of the Forum of Milan, and in the 1030 was founded the Church of San Sepolcro, from here the name of the square. But today we aren’t here to talk about this, but for the Crypt of Leonardo of Milan. Is is located on the right of the church, where you can find a small entrance. The cost il 10 €, amount which needs to support the restoration work.
The curiosity was much, because the Crypt is opened again after 50 years. Once inside you can enjoy a free guided tour service, or more and I could get for free a multi-language (italian and english) audio guide to discover details of history and curiosity. Going down the stairs we find ourselves finally inside. A series of columns, an environment poorly lit, but pleasant, and on the left there is a theca containing the photographic copy of Holy Shroud in scale one to one. I have to admit it, pretty impressive.
The manufacturers used a number of polished stones that they found on site without knowing that it was the floor of the ancient Roman Forum of the IV century. Also today, the Crypt holds one of the most ancient testimonials of the city.
Leonardo Da Vinci, yes that Leonardo, for me the best man of wit and universal talent, visited this place and he represented in the map on display and now preserved in Paris. In a second city map of Milan, part od Codex Atlanticus, is indicated the Church and the Crypt as the “Real Center” of the city, meeting between the Cardo and the Decumano ancient Mediolanum. (I apologize for the shadow of my photos).
At the beginning, the Church war consecrated to Holy Trinity but, after the reconquest of Jerusalem, the archbishop of Milan, Anselmo IV from Bovisio, changed the name into Church of San Sepolcro.
Additional ground in support of the change was the presence, from the foundation, of a copy of the tomb of Christ in the underground of the Church, that is the Crypt of Leonardo of Milan: tradition says that inside laid the ground taken by the Crusaders in Jerusalem along with other relics taken from the Holy Land.
Also in one of the apses you can find a large copper palm, built under Cardinal Federico Borromeo in 1616. The palm is the symbol of wisdom.
Opening Hours: Monday 2.00 pm – 6.00 pm. Tuesday to Friday 2.00 pm – 8.00 pm. Saturday and Sunday 12.00 pm – 8.00 pm.
I also wanted to tell you, sometimes is not necessarily need to go from the other side of the world to see wonderfull places, but even just looking at each home to find “secrets” places.”
